Having lived on the North Shore my entire life, let me showcase your home and all the beauty this area has to offer. Bringing proven results and award winning experience to you.

Moving to North Vancouver brings excitement about mountain views, hiking trails, and vibrant communities. But for families, it also brings a specific challenge: navigating school catchment boundaries. Your home address dictates where your child goes to school. Understanding this system prevents enrollment surprises and ensures your children get into the programs they need.

This guide explains how North Vancouver School District (SD44) catchment areas work, how to register, and how to verify your boundary. I also cover cross-boundary transfers and specific documents you need.

What is a School Catchment Area?

A school catchment area is a specific geographic zone assigned to a school. If you live inside this zone, your child is a “catchment student” for that school. The North Vancouver School District (SD44) operates on this system to manage student populations and ensure local access to education.

According to the British Columbia School Act, a student is “resident” in British Columbia if they and their guardian are “ordinarily resident” in the province. Your primary residence determines your catchment school. This means you cannot use a business address, a relative’s address, or a property you own but do not live in.

Why Do Catchments Matter?

Catchments matter because many North Vancouver schools operate at or near capacity. “Ordinarily resident” students living within a catchment get enrollment priority. If you live outside the boundary, your child is a “non-catchment” student. Non-catchment students only get spots if space remains after all local children enroll.

In high-demand areas like Central Lonsdale or Lynn Valley, catchment boundaries are strict. Buying a home one street over can mean the difference between walking to school or driving across town.

How Do I Find My School Catchment in North Vancouver?

You find your catchment by using the official SD44 tools. Do not rely on general real estate websites or word-of-mouth, as boundaries change.

Use the School Locator Tool

The North Vancouver School District provides an online School Locator. You enter your street address, and it lists your designated English and French Immersion elementary and secondary schools.

  1. Visit the North Vancouver School District website.
  2. Navigate to the “Schools” tab and select “School Locator”.
  3. Type in your full street address.
  4. Review the results for both Elementary (K-7) and Secondary (8-12).

Note: In rare cases where the map and the locator tool disagree, the School Locator result prevails.

Check the Catchment Map

SD44 publishes a PDF map showing the entire district’s boundaries. This map visualizes how “Families of Schools” (FOS) work. A Family of Schools consists of a secondary school and the specific elementary schools that feed into it.

For example, if you live in the Argyle Secondary catchment, you likely live in the catchment for one of its feeder elementary schools, such as Boundary, Lynn Valley, Ross Road, or Upper Lynn.

When Should I Register My Child for School?

You should register as soon as enrollment opens or immediately after you move. Registration dates vary based on whether you are a new family or applying for a specific program like Kindergarten or French Immersion.

Kindergarten Registration Timeline

Kindergarten registration typically runs from October to December for the following school year.

  • Priority Registration: Usually occurs between late October and early December.
  • Late Registration: Applications received after the December deadline go to the bottom of the priority list.

Grades 1-12 Registration Timeline

For students entering Grades 1 through 12, registration for priority placement usually opens in late January and closes in early March.

  • Priority Placement Deadline: Often the first Friday in March (e.g., March 3rd).
  • Late Applications: Processed based on remaining space, not catchment priority.

If you arrive in North Vancouver during the summer or middle of the school year, you must register immediately at the Central Registration office.

How Does Proof of Address Work?

Proof of address is the most critical part of registration. SD44 requires specific documents to prove you are “ordinarily resident” at the address you claim.

Accepted Documents for Homeowners

If you own your home, you must provide:

  • Purchase Agreement: A completed contract of purchase and sale with all subjects removed.
  • Utility Bill: A current BC Hydro, gas, or landline phone bill in a parent’s name.

Important: Pre-sale agreements are not considered valid proof of address. You must have a firm deal with subjects removed or be living in the completed home.

Accepted Documents for Renters

If you rent, you must provide:

  • Formal Tenancy Agreement: A signed lease.
  • Utility Bill: A bill in the tenant’s name.

If utilities are included in your rent and the bill is in the landlord’s name, you need:

  1. The Tenancy Agreement.
  2. The Landlord’s Utility Bill.
  3. A third document in your name at that address (e.g., bank statement, BC Driver’s License, tenant insurance).

What If I Live With Family?

If you live with friends or family without a formal lease, the process is stricter. You need:

  • A letter from the homeowner verifying the arrangement and listing all family members.
  • Proof of the homeowner’s residence (utility bill).
  • A third document in the parent’s name (bank statement, BC ID, vehicle registration).

In some cases, the District Principal may require a notarized letter verifying the living arrangement.

Can I Apply for a School Outside My Catchment?

Yes, you can apply for a “Cross-Boundary Transfer,” but success is not guaranteed.

The Transfer Process

Families wishing to enroll in a non-catchment school must submit a Transfer Request Form to Central Registration. This usually happens during the priority transfer window (January to March).

Priority Order for Enrollment

The BC School Act (Section 74.1) dictates enrollment priority when space is limited. North Vancouver follows this hierarchy:

  1. Catchment Area Child (Sibling): Lives in catchment and has a sibling already at the school.
  2. Catchment Area Child: Lives in catchment (no sibling).
  3. Non-Catchment (District) Child (Sibling): Lives in North Vancouver (SD44) but outside the school’s zone, with a sibling at the school.
  4. Non-Catchment (District) Child: Lives in North Vancouver but outside the zone.
  5. Out of District Child: Lives outside North Vancouver (e.g., West Vancouver or Burnaby).

If a school is full, they deny cross-boundary requests.

What Are Families of Schools (FOS)?

North Vancouver organizes schools into groups called Families of Schools. This structure ensures a smooth transition from elementary to secondary school.

Secondary School Catchments

There are six main secondary schools, each with specific feeder elementary schools:

  • Argyle Secondary: Feeds from Boundary, Lynn Valley, Ross Road, Upper Lynn.
  • Carson Graham Secondary: Feeds from Braemar, Capilano, Carisbrooke, Larson, Norgate, Queen Mary, Westview.
  • Handsworth Secondary: Feeds from Canyon Heights, Cleveland, Highlands, Montroyal.
  • Seycove Secondary: Feeds from Cove Cliff, Dorothy Lynas, Sherwood Park.
  • Sutherland Secondary: Feeds from Brooksbank, Eastview, Ridgeway, Queensbury.
  • Windsor Secondary: Feeds from Blueridge, Lynnmour, Seymour Heights.

Understanding which secondary school your elementary catchment feeds into helps you plan for the long term.

How Does French Immersion Catchment Work?

French Immersion is a District program, meaning catchments work differently. It is not available at every school.

Early French Immersion (Kindergarten)

Admission to Early French Immersion is often by lottery because demand exceeds supply.

  • Catchment Priorities: Siblings of current French Immersion students get first priority.
  • Placement: After siblings, spots are often filled by lottery order.

Late French Immersion (Grade 6)

Students can enter French Immersion in Grade 6. This creates a new “catchment” path. For example, a student at a non-Immersion elementary school might transfer to a different school for Grade 6 Late Immersion, changing their feeder path for secondary school.

Do Pre-Sale Contracts Count for Catchment?

No, pre-sale contracts do not count.

North Vancouver School District policy states that pre-sale agreements are not considered. You must have a purchase agreement with subjects removed to register.

This is a common issue for families buying into new developments that are not yet complete. If you buy a condo that finishes in October, but school starts in September, you cannot register for that catchment in March using the pre-sale contract. You must register where you currently live.

What Documents Do Newcomers to Canada Need?

If you are new to Canada, you must provide immigration documents in addition to proof of address.

Permanent Residents

  • Permanent Resident Card (both sides) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence.
  • Passports for parents and children.

Work Permit Holders

  • Parent’s Work Permit (valid for 1 year or more).
  • Proof of employment (25+ hours/week).
  • Passports and Student Visitor Records.

Central Registration reviews these documents annually to ensure compliance.

How Can a Realtor Help with Catchments?

Navigating real estate and school boundaries simultaneously is complex. A listing might claim “Handsworth Catchment,” but boundaries shift, or the home might sit on the dividing line.

I have lived on the North Shore my entire life. I know which streets fall into which zones and how the “Families of Schools” feed into one another. When I work with clients, I verify the catchment for every property we view. I ensure the purchase timeline aligns with SD44 registration deadlines so you have your “subjects removed” document ready when you need it.

If you are looking for a home in a specific school zone, I can set up a custom search that filters specifically for those neighbourhoods.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You must be “ordinarily resident” at the address. Using a false address is considered fraud. The school district may require notarized letters or additional proof if living arrangements are informal.

Generally, yes, but not always. If a school is significantly over capacity, the district may place catchment students in the nearest school with space. However, catchment students always have priority over non-catchment transfers.

The priority transfer window typically closes on the first Friday of March. Applications after this date are processed based on remaining space, which is rare in popular schools.

A catchment is the geographic zone for your immediate school (e.g., Elementary). A feeder school is the elementary school that automatically leads to a specific high school (Secondary).

You can register once you have a purchase agreement with subjects removed or a signed lease. You cannot register based on an offer that is still conditional.

No. French Immersion is a “Program of Choice.” Catchment helps determines which French Immersion school you apply to, but entry is often determined by a lottery due to high demand.

You should register at Central Registration immediately. If your new catchment school has space, your child can switch. If it is full, they will be placed in the nearest school with room until a spot opens.

Technically, no. They have catchment areas. However, because high schools are larger, they sometimes have more flexibility for cross-boundary transfers than small elementary schools, depending on the year’s enrollment numbers.
